Phase I: Transition Time
- During this phase, the pastor announces their retirement and the congregation celebrates the time and experiences shared.
- A Call Committee is formed by the Church Council and they take steps to begin a pastor search.
- The Church Council determines if an Interim Pastor will be identified to serve the congregation during the call process.
Phase II: Ministry Site Profile (MSP) Completion
- The Church Council gathers input to complete a Ministry Site Profile (MSP). The MSP serves as a summary of the characteristics and ministry of the church.
- The MSP is submitted to the ELCA and serves as an integral document shared with potential candidates as their first exposure to Southwood Lutheran.
- The Interim Pastor, if identified, commonly begins working with the church during Phase II or Phase III or the call process, depending on availability.
Phase III: Interviewing Candidates/Discerning the Candidate of Choice
- The Call Committee receives nominations of pastoral candidates from the Office of the Bishop (ELCA) or through other sources.
- The Call Committee reviews candidate profiles and gains a better understanding of the candidate’s gifts and talents.
- Candidates are identified for first interviews. Each candidate is notified as to whether they will continue in the process.
- The Call Committee continues the interview process until they discern the candidate of choice. Upon receiving consent from the candidate, the Call Committee presents the candidate of choice recommendation to the Church Council.
- The Church Council sets the date for a special congregational call meeting. A two-thirds majority vote (of members present) is required in calling a new pastor.
Phase IV: Preparing for and Welcoming the New Pastor
- The newly identified pastor, Church Council, and Office of the Bishop will coordinate a date for the installation of the new pastor.
- The congregation bids farewell to the Interim Pastor.
- The Church Council and Call Committee will plan activities to welcome the new pastor (and family) to the congregation.
