Communion Change - Beginning January 2023

28Nov

Communion is an important gift of grace.  When we receive communion, we are receiving God’s grace and the love of Christ.  As a central part of our worship, it was sorely missed during the early stages of the pandemic.

As we’ve progressed through the pandemic, Southwood has explored different methods for communion distribution and found merits for each option.  For some, coming forward to the altar is a meaningful.  For others, taking communion in the pew creates community when the bread and wine is shared together.

We learned that no matter how communion is distributed, we can experience Christ in a sacred way.  With this in mind, Southwood’s congregational leadership shaped an updated plan to distribute communion starting in January 2023:
•On the 1st  Sunday (and the occasional 5th  Sunday) of each month, in-pew communion will be offered at all worship services.
•On the 3rd  Sunday of each month, attendees will proceed forward to receive communion during all worship services.
•During holidays and mid-week services, in-pew communion will be offered.

More details will be shared about the upcoming changes with impacted volunteers.  New volunteers are welcome and require a very small-time commitment (choose to prep on Friday or Saturday OR serve on Sunday morning). Some roles are suitable for families. See attachment below for details and let Jo or   know if you can help.

Just as there are many names for the celebration of the Last Supper, there are many distribution methods. It all comes back to one Holy meal where the gift of God’s grace is received.
