James 2:15-16
Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? Ever feel like you are going through the motions? James 2:15-16 (NIV)
The day to day bustle makes it easy to go through the motions, think about the things you could be doing and should be doing for others, but sometimes we just don’t. We just go through the motions. We are missing the “show” in “show and tell”.
As a teacher, one writing lesson I always had with my students was about the concept of “show don’t tell”. We can write the words to our story, we can tell what’s happening in our story. But better yet we can show our story.
Tell
She was a caring person
Show
She noticed the lonely boy sitting alone at lunch. She joined him offering some of her bags of chips.
She spent all afternoon drawing, just to give her finished drawing to her sick friend.
She wrapped her arms around her friend, knowing her friend was having a hard time.
Tell
He was thoughtful
Show
He carefully tied his sister’s shoes before heading to the park.
He put away the game before his mom asked him to.
He remembered her favorite coffee drink and delivered it to her to say “Have a good day.”
It’s not what we tell God that we will do, it’s what we show the world with God’s love that we will do. Show….don’t just tell.
Go in peace and Serve the Lord…yep, that actually means to go do it.
Questions for Reflection:
- How do you SHOW others God's love?
- How do you see others SHOWing God’s love?
Prayer:
Dear Lord,
Thank you for all that you are and all that you have allowed me to be.
Lord, I continue to pray that you use me to show your love in the world. I pray that I just don’t think and say things that I should do, but that I show the world your love.
Amen
